The theory on the natural elements in the philosophical and theological system of the Byzantine thinker George Pachymeres

In this paper we discuss the general question on how a Byzantine philosopher-theologian of late Palaeologan Renaissance forms some aspects Natural Science. Specifically, focusing George Pachymeres’ Paraphrasis Pseudo-Dionysius Areopagite’s De divinis nominibus, investigate philosopher builds his theory natural elements (earth, air, water, fire). We raise number questions that have to do with way in which exist, what is their relation matter, causality works case and whether priority given Ontology or Epistemology. From methodological point view, approach text scientifically, philosophically theologically. The most important conclusion draw commentary references can be placed into three categories (the 1. as products divine energies; 2. cosmological sources; 3. allegorical names), depending context. Finally, contend that, although he does not present here systematic elements, thinker, who has thorough knowledge both Platonic Aristotelian tradition, manages conceive concept “element”.
